The Grade II listed Guy’s Cliffe is a site with considerable historical and scientific importance, which includes Guy’s Cliffe House, Guy’s Cave, St. Mary Magdalen Chapel, St. Mary Lodge, The Archway, as well as having triple SSSI certification for the Triassic cliffs at the rear of the house by the river.
Sadly, the remains of the Glade II listed house are at considerable risk due to the severe deterioration that has occurred since stabilisation works were carried out in 1995. The building was becoming covered in ivy and internal trees/vegetation, which were further undermining the property.
King Henry’s has given a grant of £37,000 to ‘Bring Back Guy’s Cliffe’, a group of local volunteers who in recent years have been working hard to rediscover and protect the site. This grant was for the next phase of the work to remove the ivy and tree growth from the building to make it safe and to make the collapse of the cliff safe. Work that required hydraulic platforms to gain access.
The work required removing the ivy at its roots, with the next stage to apply weed killer and a mesh membrane covered in gravel to prevent future growth.
The site is much loved by local residents and is currently used as much as possible for community events such as volunteering, scout camps, school educational visits and heritage weekends. To continue improving and increasing the availability of the site for community use essential remedial work is required.
